This 2 volume work is a photographic record of railways in Ireland. As a sample of things to come from the author (Industrial Archaeology of Northern Ireland - 1980),
the first item covered in this book is 'A Scheme for the Conveyance of Coals upon a Canal without the Use of Locks', by Richard Owen. This did have a railed
connection, in that the plan involved the use of coal trucks running into small tub boats on rails.
As ever, the primary focus is on engines and rolling stock, however, there are a few wood cuttings repoduced from the Illustrated London News of significant events
(e.g., openings of lines) and a chapter on railway architecture in this volume. This section includes a photo of the original building at Clonhugh on the Mullingar -
Longford line. Other photos contain elements of IH interest.
The photographs are interspersed with text giving a potted history of railways in Ireland.
